At the top of Mount Athos, after a long hike, we sought shelter from the burning sun within the whitewashed walls of a monastery. When we opened the doors, the scent of resinous shrub mingled with the incense and myrrh that had burned during the service. It is said that the spicy, woody scent of the resins soothes the soul and that it is mysteriously able to summon silence. We can imagine the three wise kings coming silently to offer their gifts of myrrh, incense and gold.
